Tropico 4 is the fourth instalment in the construction and management simulation series of Tropico. This game was developed by Haemimont Games and Feral Interactive, and published in 2011 by Kalypso Media, FX Interactive, and Feral Interactive for the platforms: Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and OS X.
The gameplay of Tropico 4 is similar to the previous games in the Tropico series as it is focused on the character El Presidente and his journey to remain in office for the island of Tropico.
Tropico 4 contains 10 maps that have already been created for the player to play on, but they player is also given the ability to create and customize their very own maps for play.
Through the random island tool offered in Tropico 4, the player will have control over the island’s size, the type of vegetation found on the land, the variations of mineral deposits, and the range of elevation. There are also a few expansion packs available that will offer even more premade islands and maps.
Another way for the player to customize their gameplay in Tropico 4 is through their characters avatar. Tropico 4 also offers various premade avatars for the player’s character, just like the maps, but they can also make their own specialized avatar.
They are able to control multiple physical features of the avatar including: gender, clothing, skin color, accessories, hats, hairstyles and haircuts, facial hair, moustaches, beards, earrings, jewellery, traits, and personality. Once the player has finished one complete mission the player’s character will level up their traits.
The campaign game mode in Tropico 4 consists of 20 total missions that are played on a total of 10 varying maps. The player will begin the campaign as the ruler of the island, El Presidente, as he has just gained his place in office for the nation of Tropico.
The player will have the responsibility of tracking each of the imports and exports to and from the island, unlike previous games in the series where only the exports could be monitored.
Tropico 4 gives the player access to a council of ministers who can assist the player with any problem that they come across during their rule. The Tropico 4 will also bring on natural disasters which the player will have to face and handle to protect his people. There will also be political factions with different beliefs and goals so the player will have to juggle their demands to keep them all satisfied.
Tropico 4 keeps the comedic aspect that was seen in Tropico 3. The in-game radio station available to the players is called Tropico News Today and it includes the satirical humor that creates the mood of the game. Tropico 4 has an additional expansion pack titled Modern Times, as well as several able content packs that bring new concepts to the gameplay.
