This War of Mine is a war survival action- adventure game developed by 11 bit studios. It has been released for the following platforms: Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux. This War of Mine is different from most war games because it captures more civilian experiences of war over front line combat. It was inspired by the Siege of Sarajevo from 1992-96 during the Bosnian War.
This War of Mine is a strategy based survival game where players take control of a group of civilian survivors in a makeshift shelter in a war stricken city. Surviving the war with the tools and materials the player can find through the characters they control is the main goal.
This War of Mine was inspired by the poor living conditions and war time disasters that the Bosnian civilians faced during the longest city siege in modern history, the 1992-96 Siege of Sarajevo. It’s set up in the city of Ulraznavia, Pogoren and is overall based on the Yugoslavian Wars.
Most of the player’s characters will require constant assistance to stay alive as they have no military background or survival experience. It’s up to the player to keep the characters’ health, hunger, and mood levels up until a ceasefire is declared. The player must make life and death moral decisions to try and protect the survivals of their shelter.
Players may have to sacrifice a few characters for the longer-term survival of others. There are no good or bad decisions during war – there is only survival. Survive now in the longest siege in the history of modern warfare in This War of Mine.
This War of Mine goes through day and night cycles. The player will not be able to explore outside during the daytime because of enemy snipers. This time allows the player to craft tools from the materials they’ve gathered, carry out trades, upgrade the shelter, cook food, and heal the injured survivors.
The player is safely able to go outside at night to scavenge for food and supplies. The player can scour the nearby areas for useful resources that can help them stay alive. The player will choose one of their civilians to go on the missions scavenging the unique locations for survival supplies, although there could be danger even during the night.
During this time player controlled survivors may also run into computer controlled survivors. They can choose to help them by offering items and necessities such as food or medicine, or they can rob and kill them. Radios can be built inside the player’s shelter to give them useful information such as weather warnings, updates on the city’s economy, as well as news on the continuing war.
Information on the war helps the player plan helpful shelter upgrades and scavenging missions. The game recreates one of the longest sieges in the history of modern warfare – Sarajevo – and really allows the player to experience the horrifying situation many civilians found themselves in.
